Description
*** Check Out My Video Album Below! *** Zeus is a handsome Pyr mix who sports a short, soft coat that's just begging to be pet. He came to us after being surrendered to a shelter in Tennessee - his only "crime" was being so scared of fireworks that he escaped his electric fence to find safety. Zeus is fully housebroken, leash trained, and crate trained. He knows "sit," "down," "paw," "in your crate," and "come," though like any deity used to getting his way, if something distracts him, all bets are off. His activity level is medium, with the potential for high-energy play when another dog is involved. Speaking of which, Zeus does very well with other dogs, both at home and on walks, and it doesn't matter whether they're male or female - all his canine companions so far have been 40 pounds and up, though his foster believes he'd do just fine with a small dog too, since he also does well with cats - he will give them a curious sniff and then go on about his business like the gentleman he is. When it comes to meeting new people, Zeus is very protective of his inner circle and isn't a fan of strangers - especially kids, who seem to leave him wondering, "Why are they so small?!" But once he's comfortable, he's a different boy entirely: playful and silly, zooming around while trying (bless him) to maintain his manners despite being tall, muscular, and prone to sliding across floors. He stays off the couch even when the resident dogs are lounging on it, simply because he hasn't been invited - such restraint from Olympus's finest! He loves being near his people above all else, and adores his toys - a squeaky turtle was his first great love once he discovered toys were fun, and these days he's smitten with chomping on and untangling ropes. He'll also chase a bounced ball for a little while, though don't expect a marathon game of fetch. The way he turns for belly rubs and tries to rope his foster siblings into play is the kind of thing that melts hearts on sight! The ideal home for Zeus would be a quieter household when it comes to visitors, but one full of playful, loving energy that can keep up with a dog who generates belly laughs on the regular. A doggie playmate and a 6-foot fenced yard would make his world complete - he'd happily play nearly all day with a willing partner! When he's not playing, he's content lounging near his person while they work, going on walks, or supervising important tasks like furniture assembly (though he tends to sleep on the job). He'll do best with a family who's home more often than not, patient enough to help him build his confidence, and creative enough to guide him through his wariness of strangers. In return, you'll get a silly, smiley dog who adores his fellow canines and the people lucky enough to be in his circle of trust. You’ll know you made it when Zeus gives you that lick of approval! National Great Pyrenees Rescue (NGPR) has been rescuing and adopting out Great Pyrenees since 2006. Our relationship doesn’t end with adoption, as we continue to support adopters throughout the lifetime of their dog. Our goal is to assess every application on its own merits. Key considerations are: 1) the experience of the applicant with large breed dogs 2) children in the household or regularly visiting the household are ready for a large-breed dog who is a guardian by nature and 3) the sex of other dogs currently residing in the household to avoid same-sex aggression issues. For puppies under six months old, the applicant’s ability to socialize the puppy with older dogs is a priority. We have many Pyrs and Pyr mixes who need homes.
