Description

* This dog will be at the Palo Alto Pet Food Express on Saturday, August 29th from 12–3 PM (unless adopted prior to the event). All DPS Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, flea/tick treated, and microchipped prior to adoption.   Adoption fee: $800 Meet Ferris Bueller: Life Moves Pretty Fast—Ferris Plans to Enjoy Every Minute   Ferris Bueller has never met a day off—or a human—he didn’t love. This 2–3 year old, 76-pound Golden Retriever was rescued from the shelter, but he has already put those difficult days behind him. Ferris approaches his new life with enormous enthusiasm, a stuffed animal in his mouth, and the firm belief that every outing should include a stop at Marshalls. Ferris is a big, affectionate, gloriously goofy Golden who absolutely adores people. He wants to be near his humans, accompany them on their adventures, and greet them with happy cries when they return. Whether he is walking through a store, relaxing at home, or proudly carrying a stuffie around the neighborhood, Ferris is simply thrilled to be included. Ferris Bueller’s Day On Ferris begins his morning around 6am with a trip outside, followed by breakfast. After some time outdoors, he is ready for a walk. Despite his size and enthusiasm for life, Ferris is an exceptionally polite leash walker. He does not pull, lunge at dogs or people, or try to chase everything that moves. He is perfectly content to stroll beside his person—usually with a stuffed animal in his mouth, naturally. Back at home, Ferris settles surprisingly well. He doesn’t climb, counter surf, or spend his day looking for trouble. Once his exercise and social needs have been met, he is happy to lie near his people with a beloved stuffie. He can certainly be playful and energetic, but he also has a very useful off switch when there isn’t another dog around keeping the excitement going. At night, Ferris sleeps loose in the living room and makes it all the way through without a problem. He has not had a single accident in his foster home, including overnight, and appears to be housetrained. He isn’t currently comfortable spending extended periods in a crate, although he will enter one briefly, giving his future family a foundation to build upon.   Professional Man About Town   Ferris is remarkably well-behaved in public. On a recent excursion to Old Navy and Marshalls, he patiently browsed the aisles, charmed the shoppers, and even selected a new stuffed animal for himself. It was a very successful shopping trip by any reasonable Golden Retriever standard.   His ideal family will enjoy taking him along whenever possible. He would love neighborhood walks, dog-friendly stores, outdoor cafés, weekend adventures, and any other activity that allows him to be part of the action. He doesn’t necessarily require endless miles of exercise, but he does need regular activity, enrichment, and opportunities to channel his youthful energy appropriately.   Ferris is currently carrying a few extra pounds, so his future family should help him work toward a healthier weight through sensible portions and consistent exercise. Fortunately, Ferris thinks walks are great fun—especially when properly accessorized with a stuffie.   Humans Are His Favorite People   Ferris is an enthusiastic people pleaser who wants nothing more than to be close to his humans. He is affectionate, devoted, and genuinely delighted whenever someone pays attention to him. His happiness is contagious; he makes it very clear that simply being included is the best thing that has ever happened to him.   He has spent time around a three-year-old child and was friendly, but he did jump up once in his excitement. Because Ferris is a large, strong dog who may occasionally forget just how large he is, a home with children over 10 would likely be the most comfortable fit.   Ferris has also interacted with both small and large dogs. He appropriately ignored a small dog who nipped at him and has not shown growling or barking toward the dogs in his foster home. However, his energy can be a lot for other dogs and he needs some work on basic doggy play-manners. He also likes to collect all the toys and isn’t particularly interested in sharing them. For those reasons, Ferris may be happiest as the only dog in his adoptive home, where he can soak up the attention and keep his full stuffie collection to himself.   The Part Where Ferris Needs Your Commitment Ferris is still learning that his people will always come back. When left alone, he currently barks, whether he is crated or given access to a secure yard. He will need a family prepared to work patiently and consistently on alone-time training, beginning with very short absences and gradually helping him build confidence. A family able to include him in much of daily life while still actively teaching him how to feel safe alone would be an excellent match.   He is also a high-energy, powerful young dog who will benefit from structure, continued training, clear boundaries, and meaningful enrichment. Ferris does not need perfection on day one, but he does need adopters who understand that his enormous heart comes with some work and who are committed to helping him become his best self.   Ferris has already experienced enough uncertainty. What he needs now is a family that will see his sweetness, embrace his joyful enthusiasm, and stay for the training as well as the cuddles. Give him guidance, patience, a healthy meal plan, and an ample supply of stuffed animals, and Ferris will repay you with complete devotion.   Because, as his namesake would surely agree, life moves pretty fast. Ferris is ready to spend the rest of his enjoying it with you.
